How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located on the outside of the transmission over the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU through a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will show a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and could indicate chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult since there are two pins for the connector and they perform different functions however the best method to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. If the sensor is functional, it should read about 1000 ohms. Check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, i experienced a big cut in power like the engine is running out of gas or the injectors are not firing any more. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the 4th was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when i start the engine with no sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump out. The fourth one remains shut. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I get zero ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it runs fine check here with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, as i think i've pretty much eliminated everything else. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please chime in! TIA!
